As a child Dave Pelzer was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother, a mother who played tortuous, unpredicataable games that left one of her sons nearly dead. She no longer considered him a son, but a slave; no longer a boy but an 'it'. His bed an old army cot in the basement, his colthes were torn and smelly and when he was allowed the luxury of food, it was scraps from the dogs' bowl. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare played out behind closed doorss

'Such a story cannot fail to move' - Mail On Sunday

Nobody could read the book without being moved by its story. It’s about a young boy who is being abused by his mother. The best thing about the book is that the story is told in the first person, which lets the reader to look at the world through the eyes of David,  feel his pain, hunger and desperation. The reader can easily empathize with the  David and his experiences. This book made me appreciate my own family which, is not perfect by any means, but allowed me to have a relativly normall childhood.
